What I’m Teaching…the Sacral Chakra

Not gonna lie, the sacral chakra is my favorite. It’s the chakra that I feel the most connection to and my hips are the part of my body that always seems to need a really good stretch. When in doubt, I always go back to the sacral chakra.

Svadhisthana is the sanskrit word for the sacral chakra. Sva means self and adhisthana means established and secure. Looking at the body, the sacral chakra is located 3 fingers below the navel and includes the hip, pelvis and womb. It is the center of your creativity and expression. The sacral chakra is represented by the color orange and its element is water, inspiring us to go with the flow.

Often we associate essential oils and crystals with the chakras. The sacral chakra is no different. For essential oils for this chakra, we look at cleansing aromas, such as eucalyptus, chamomile, spearmint, rose, or sage. Crystals to represent the sacral chakra are often orange in color. We selected carnelian, which helps boost creativity and passion.

When planning our flow, I really looked for poses that left room for creativity and focused on our hips. We took time in butterfly pose at the beginning and again at the end of our time together. The stretching continued with a lizard lunge, pigeon pose and figure 4 stretches. We paired our hip poses and stretches with a bit of old school hip hop enhancing our theme and a little bit of creativity.

In addition to yoga, there are many things you can do to help strengthen your sacral chakra. Spending time in water can help with a sense of fluidity. Any form of creative expression, such as art, baking, dance, etc can also enhance this area.
